Compilation of the database was initiated in the mid-1970s under the name "Register of boreholes of the factographic geological databank". It was greatly enlarged during the 1980s when data from tens of thousands of boreholes were entered into the register every year. In 1990, intensive loading of archival borehole data was completed. The annual acquisition, mostly of records from newly-drilled boreholes, now ranges between 4 and 5 thousand. Until 31.12.2023, the expert data guarantor - RNDr. Ivana Dudková.
